Sector Funds
For the uninitiated it is better to first have a clear idea about sector funds. This is a kind of mutual fund that completely targets a single sector. Although the investor has to focus in one field, the investment can prove to be a bit too dangerous. It may prove riskier than other broad market investments since the scope of diversification are absent. Despite the sector fund’s vulnerability, investors are keen to invest in them when they feel that the particular sector can prove to be lucrative during a specific period. Mostly these are invested into when the investor chooses to short sale one of his holdings. Some of the better known of these include financial services funds, health care funds, gold and precious metals funds as well as real estate funds. As a fact, they exist almost for every sector in the market.
These are also known as thematic funds and they chiefly target those sectors of the economy where the investor can be assured of a high growth rate or which have potential for a long period. Highly volatile and risky these can prove a boon or an utter disaster for the investor depending on the trend of the economy for that sector. This is the chief reason why investors tend to introduce these sector mutual funds in cycles. They are primarily seasonal in nature. An in-depth analysis for their being seasonal is the reason that they limit the investor’s capabilities to capitalize on other sectors of the market. It is only wise to begin such investments when that particular sector is showing distinguished growth rate.
These days this sector has been broadly classified into 8 diverse fields. They are technology, communications, utilities, natural resources, financials, healthcare, real estate and precious metals. Despite these existing 8 sectors, investors by the day try to include several other options which may prove lucrative in the long run. The rush is also on to create newer products in these existing sectors. People investing in sector funds run the risk of investing in a relatively less tested field, however, in future it might well turn out to be the most profitable. Therefore, these investments are solely for those of the adventurous type and do not mind taking a little risk. The positive side is that investing companies change schemes to suit the needs of investors. Those looking for a bit of diversification while investing in stocks can turn to this sort of mutual fund.
This kind of mutual fund is ideal for those interested in a bit of speculation. This means placing bets on stocks of a particular sector which is speculated to rise in profit in the future. The entire proposition however, is to make as much profit within as short a period. Although it is always wise to speculate with a small portion of one’s stock. However, before investing in sector fund one need to be sure of the features offered by various companies for different sector mutual funds.
